Every Tricare plan, explained plainly.
Tricare has distinct plan types by eligibility category. Coverage for substance use treatment is generally strong across all — here’s how each plan handles out-of-state residential care.
The HMO-style plan for active duty and eligible retirees. Lower cost-sharing. Requires PCM (Primary Care Manager) coordination for referrals. Active-duty members always use Tricare Prime; our team handles the military referral pathway.
The PPO-style plan for retirees and eligible family members. You can choose any Tricare-authorized provider without a PCM referral. Modest annual enrollment fee and higher copays than Prime.
For Medicare-eligible military retirees and dependents. Pays secondary to Medicare, covering most of what Medicare doesn’t. Substance use coverage follows Medicare rules with Tricare filling gaps.
Premium-based health plan for qualified members of the Selected Reserve and their families. Coverage mirrors Tricare Select with enrollment fee.
Allows adult children of Tricare-eligible sponsors to purchase coverage after losing dependent status. Prime or Select options available.
Premium-based coverage for qualified members of the Retired Reserve before Medicare eligibility. Coverage mirrors Tricare Select.
Medical necessity, by ASAM standard.
Tricare applies ASAM criteria for level-of-care determination. Coverage is authorized in stages as your clinical picture evolves. Tricare has notably strong substance-use benefits with no arbitrary day caps.
Medical Detox
Typically authorized 3–7 days depending on substance and withdrawal severity (CIWA-Ar for alcohol, COWS for opioids). Concurrent review extends coverage as clinically needed. MAT covered when indicated.
Residential Inpatient
Typically authorized in 5–7 day increments, with no arbitrary cap when clinically justified. Co-occurring PTSD, TBI, and depression — common among service members — treated under the same authorization.
Aftercare Coordination
Discharge planning coordinates with the military health system, VA, or private network step-down care — outpatient, IOP, PHP — through our partner network, matched to your Tricare benefits and home duty station.
Tricare costs, service-member friendly.
Tricare is one of the most affordable benefit packages in U.S. healthcare. Active-duty service members have no cost-sharing at all. Retirees and family members pay modest copays or cost-shares that vary by plan and sponsor status (active, retired, activated reservist).
Our financial counselors walk you through exactly what your plan covers and any cost-sharing before admission. For service members and their families, treatment is typically fully covered or near-fully covered.
