The first wave of technology to change alcohol and drug treatment in the 21st century was the Internet itself. Now we’re entering a new phase of technological transformation in the drug rehab landscape as clinicians continue to look for new ways to help people overcome addiction.
From AI to telehealth and other tech, this Pines Recovery Life article explores how new technology is reshaping how people get sober and stay that way.
How AI is Beginning to Change Drug Treatment
AI is a remarkable technology that emerged almost overnight. While many people may not fully understand it, its value is clear. Instead of thinking like humans, AI quickly processes information to spot patterns and correlations. In short, AI doesn’t think for us, it helps us connect the dots and draw informed conclusions.
In the substance use disorder world this can be useful in several ways. Some alcohol and drug rehabs in Florida and other states are beginning to use AI tools to develop customized treatment plans. For example,an AI-powered patient database could help quickly identify the most suitable therapies or support groups and even flags potential medication interactions during detox.
We are only in the very early stages of using AI in drug treatment however. Rest assured that AI is not making treatment decisions on its own. It’s simply used as a tool to ensure all the i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed.
5 Other Ways That AI May Be Used in Drug Treatment
AI is only one element in the technological change sweeping through the alcohol and drug treatment field. However, it’s probably the most significant simply because AI’s, even the relatively simple LLM’s we have now, have many different potential applications.
Here’s 5 more ways that AI is being used in drug and alcohol rehabs in Florida and across the country:
1: Spotting Warning Signs:
By spot checking current and past patient info, AI can spot early signs of relapse so help can be provided before a crisis hits. For example, if a patient has missed their last two IOP treatment visits, the AI might throw a red flag before someone else notices and prompt a therapist to call and follow up.
2: Informing Treatment Choices:
AI tools can provide therapists and other clinicians with real-time insights, helping them fine-tune your treatment as your journey unfolds. Maybe the AI notices that your primary therapist has mentioned anger frequently in their notes and suggests an anger management track.
3: AI and Telehealth:
Telehealth is basically healthcare provided at a distance, for example outpatient groups conducted over a secure, HIPAA-compliant web video platform. AI can make it more effective. A person who went to drug rehab in Florida could get continuing support when they return to Massachusetts. AI could make this support more interactive and effective.
4: Extra Support Around the Clock:
Chatbots on rehab websites and apps powered by AI can offer round-the-clock tips, reminders, and strategies to keep you on track between sessions. Note, these can never take the place of humans, but they aren’t meant to. They’re just one more recovery tool for your toolbox.
5: Simplified Administration:
Drug rehabs can use AI to handle routine, repetitive tasks, like scheduling sessions, questionnaires and progress tracking. Note: This wouldn’t be a replacement for human-to-human therapy, it’s in addition to it. If therapists and clinicians have less “busy work” they can spend more face time with patients.
What Other Newer Technologies Are Transforming Substance Use Treatment?
AI is one of the most significant new technologies changing the way drug and alcohol treatment works, but it’s not the only one. Telehealth drug treatment, where patients login through a secure web video portal is continuing to grow after a big boost from COVID-19 restrictions, for example. Overall, we’re seeing an increased use of technology in addiction treatment, and other areas of medicine. This is expected to continue and the development of AI is only likely to accelerate this change.
Telehealth:
- Remote therapy sessions and digital counseling over secure webcam connections.
- Makes outpatient treatment like IOP and standard OP available almost anywhere.
- Studies show that telehealth increases the odds you will stick with treatment.
Wearable Devices:
- Real-time health tracking and biofeedback with smartwatches or other wearables.
- Software integrations with the drug and alcohol rehab database back in Florida.
- Patients can use their own devices as smartwatch adoption grows.
Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR):
- Immersive therapies to manage cravings and reduce stress
- Simulated environments for relapse prevention training
- Applications for PTSD and CPTSD treatment similar to EMDR
Mobile Apps and Digital Support Platforms:
- Tools for tracking recovery milestones and accountability
- Online support groups and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) apps
- Mobile apps are inexpensive and easily accessible for most people.
What About The Human Element? I Don’t Want Addiction Therapy from an AI!
Absolutely! We get it. No AI or technology of any kind is a substitute for human interaction and never will be. That’s especially true when it comes to something as deeply personal as addiction recovery and mental health. An AI cannot replace a therapist. A mobile app isn’t the equivalent of an in-person group counseling session. We’d even go as far as to say that telehealth appointments don’t have quite the same effect as live, in-person sessions.
So. Where does that leave us? We need to look at tech solutions in drug rehabs, including AI, as what they are. Tools, and nothing more. You don’t care if your doctor uses her finger on your wrist to check your pulse or a sensor on your fingertip, do you? Does it matter if her medical notes are handwritten or typed? Nope.
At Pines Recovery Life, we believe in the ethical use of technology to improve quality of care. If a particular technology can help us deliver a more refined diagnosis or make scheduling your medication management easier, we want you to benefit from that. If telehealth allows you to stick with the same therapist you had at rehab in Florida after you go home to Ohio, we want that for you too.
4 Ways We Balance Technology with the Human Element in Drug Treatment
- Never forget that addiction is deeply personal and requires human empathy to treat.
- Never let patients feel unheard or unseen due to reliance on technology.
- Always leverage technology to improve patient care, not to dilute it in any way.
- Always ask the patient how they feel about the technology being used.
