Pines Recovery Life is licensed in Pembroke Pines, Florida for two levels of care: inpatient detox and residential. One team takes you through both.

Detox depends on what you have been using

Opioids, including fentanyl and pills

Nurses score opioid withdrawal on the COWS scale every 8 to 12 hours. If the physician judges it appropriate, you start buprenorphine and then taper off it, and every day of that taper goes in your chart. Nobody here tells you to tough it out.

Benzodiazepines

Nurses score benzodiazepine withdrawal on the CIWA-B scale, on the same 8 to 12 hour cycle. It runs longer than opioid withdrawal, and it is the one people are most likely to get badly wrong tapering themselves at home. Bring your prescription history to the call.

Stimulants

The intake assessment covers methamphetamine, cocaine, amphetamines, ecstasy and bath salts. Coming off stimulants is mostly exhaustion and low mood, so the care is supportive: nurses check on you day and night, a physician sees you every day, and you finally eat and sleep.

Most people arrive on more than one substance, often with alcohol in the mix. Sorting that out is what the nursing assessment and the physician’s exam are for. It is also why a physician writes your orders after examining you, not over the phone.

The day you arrive

Insurance details and consents first, then a urine screen and a breathalyzer. A nurse works through the full assessment, including pain, falls and nutrition. A physician takes your history, and you have a psychiatric and physical examination within your first 24 hours. Your aftercare plan is opened the same day, before anyone talks about discharge.

Detox takes days. The lingering effects last weeks

Detox takes days. The lingering effects last weeks. The same physician and nurses stay with you for both. They know your history because they were there for it, they understand what you have just been through, and they are the ones treating post-acute withdrawal, the weeks of low mood, poor sleep and cravings that come after the acute phase.

Groups run through the week, with individual therapy alongside them. The work draws on cognitive behavioral therapy, relapse prevention and motivational interviewing. A licensed clinical social worker reviews the notes in your chart. How long you stay is what the medical and clinical team decide is best for you, usually a matter of weeks.

We update your aftercare plan as you go, instead of writing it the afternoon you leave. Case management asks what you can reach at home: outpatient services, sober living, AA and NA. You leave with a written discharge summary and a plan for home.

If you are calling from another state

Most of the people we admit travel here from another state. Distance from your dealer and the people you used with helps in the first weeks. It also means your plan for afterwards has to work in the city you go home to, so case management will ask about your insurance and who prescribes for you.

The admissions team goes over what to bring and walks you through what happens when you walk in, so you know your first day before you get on the plane. Your privacy is protected throughout, and you decide who gets told anything.

The campus is three buildings around a courtyard: detox at 1151 Poinciana Drive, residential at 1201, and between them the common building with the cafeteria, theater and game room.

We check your benefits first

Most major insurance plans are accepted. Give us your plan details and we check your benefits before you are admitted or when you arrive. Then we tell you what we found. Detox and residential are billed at a daily rate. Ask for the current rate on the call and we will go through it with you, including what your insurance covers.

Questions people ask us

What is the difference between detox and rehab?
Detox is the medical part, measured in days: the substance clears while nurses manage withdrawal and a physician follows up daily. Rehab, here meaning residential, is what comes after. Both are licensed here, with the same team.
How long does it take to detox from fentanyl or other opioids?
It depends on what you were using, how much, for how long, and your health. Withdrawal is scored every 8 to 12 hours and the orders follow that score. Your physician sets the length after examining you and reassesses as you go.
Do you use Suboxone?
Buprenorphine, the medicine in Suboxone and Subutex, can be used in detox when the physician decides it is appropriate, with the taper logged day by day. Ask on the call what that would look like for you.
What about depression, anxiety or a diagnosis I already have?
Everyone has a psychiatric and physical examination within 24 hours, plus suicide and harm risk screening and a biopsychosocial assessment. Bring your prescriptions and your prescriber’s name.
