Find an AA or NA meeting, anywhere in the US.
Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings happen every hour of every day somewhere in this country — free, anonymous, no insurance required. Pines Recovery Life publishes this directory as a service. We’re a licensed medical detox and residential treatment provider, not affiliated with AA or NA. Meetings and medical treatment are complementary, and most people in lasting recovery use both.
What are AA meetings?
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a peer-led, free, anonymous fellowship founded in 1935. Members share experience and support one another in maintaining sobriety using the 12-step program. Meetings are not medical treatment — they are gatherings of people helping each other stay sober.
AA is self-supporting through voluntary contributions. No fees, no dues, no insurance needed. Literature is available at cost.
Anonymity is a founding principle. First names only. What’s said in the room stays in the room.
AA has no professional counselors or clinicians. Members volunteer as chairs, speakers, and sponsors. AA offers no medical advice.
Open meetings welcome anyone interested (family, students, allies). Closed meetings are for alcoholics only. Both share the same 12-step core.
A spiritual (not religious) recovery path based on admitting powerlessness, inventory, amends, and service. Work with a sponsor is common.
Narcotics Anonymous is a sister 12-step fellowship for any drug addiction (including alcohol). Same principles, broader scope. NA and AA often share spaces.

A common misconception: people think they have to choose between AA and medical treatment. They don’t. In fact, the clinical evidence is strong that medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and structured medical care work best alongside a 12-step or peer-support practice. Here’s how the two fit together.
Peer-led recovery maintenance
Free. Anonymous. No medical credentials. Designed for ongoing sobriety after the acute phase. Ideal when withdrawal is not medically dangerous and you have stable housing and support.
Physician-supervised withdrawal
Required when withdrawal is medically dangerous — alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids (especially fentanyl). 24/7 nursing, medication to prevent seizures and manage pain, psychiatric support. Typically 5–14 days.
Structured stabilization (~30 days)
Full-day therapy, dual-diagnosis psychiatric care, relapse-prevention skills, family programming. Bridges detox to independent recovery. Many patients use AA/NA during and after residential.
The hand-off
After detox and residential, most people return home and work a program — AA, NA, SMART Recovery, therapy, MAT — or some combination. The medical phase ends; the mutual-aid phase is lifelong for many.
Medical detox is covered by most insurance.
If you’ve been to meetings and are still unable to stop, if withdrawal is medically dangerous, or if a mental-health condition is driving the use — that’s clinical territory. Pines Recovery Life is a Joint Commission accredited, LegitScript certified, physician-led facility with 24/7 medical supervision. Verification is free and under a minute.
